  Building healthy communities by working with GPs to increase immunisation rates Australia wide

 

Overview

The General Practice Immunisation Incentives (GPII) Scheme aims to encourage at least 90% of practices to fully immunise 90% of children aged seven years and under attending their practice. It does this through the provision of financial incentives to:
  • GPs via Encounter (Information) Payments, Service Incentive Payments (SIP) & Outcomes Bonus Payments

  • parents via the Maternity Immunisation Allowance and the Child Care Benefit

  • infrastructure funding to Divisions of General Practice, State Based Organisations (SBOs) and the Australian Divisions of General Practice (ADGP).

 

Program Objectives

The objectives of the National Immunisation Program are:

  • To support the Tasmanian Divisions of General Practice to achieve the aims of the National Immunisation Program

  • Activities aimed at increasing childhood immunisation rates through stakeholder engagement, strategies targeting hard-to-reach populations and continuing networking events for Tasmanian Divisions program staff

  • Continued enhancement of relationships with all stakeholders involved in immunisation service provision

  • Advocacy at a state and national level on immunisation issues relevant to Tasmanian Divisions of General Practice

 

Immunisation Coordinator

The General Practice Tasmania Immunisation Coordinator role is commonly known in other states and territories as the State Based Organisation Immunisation Coordinator. To progress the aims of the Immunisation Program the Immunisation Coordinator undertakes a number of activities including:

  • collaboration with the Tasmanian Divisions of general practice and other stakeholders

  • development of resources that support Divisions in working with general practice to achieve better protection against vaccine preventable diseases for the entire population

  • dissemination of information and resources from state and national levels to the Divisional Immunisation Program Officers

  • statewide and national representation of Division issues

  • membership on the State Based Organisation Immunisation Coordinators (SBOIC) Network convened by the Australian Divisions of General Practice

  • participation in the State Immunisation Reference Group (SIRG) convened by the State Department of Health and Human Services.

  • The Australian General Practice Network (AGPN)

  • The State Based Organisations (SBOs)

  • Divisions of General Practice (DGPs) across Australia

  • Tasmanian State Department of Health and Human Services

  • Medicare Australia (Australian Childhood Immunisation Register)

 

Achievements

Achievements within the National Immunisation program include:

  • Development of resources to support Divisions of General Practice in collaboration with Divisions and DHHS

  • Regular meetings with Divisions Immunisation network

  • Liaison with partners including the Department of Health and Ageing, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Australian General Practice Network and Medicare Australia (ACIR)
