to increase immunisation rates Australia wide

Overview

The General Practice Tasmania Immunisation Program provides advocacy, representation and support for all Divisions of General Practice in Tasmania with the aim of increasing immunisation coverage rates and improving the quality of immunisation services.

At a program level the focus is on promoting the aims of the National Immunisation Program and the General Practice Immunisation Incentives Scheme (GPII), vaccine management (cold chain), data quality and management as well as improving immunisation rates amongst ‘hard to reach’ groups.

General Practice Immunisation Incentives Scheme (GPII)

The GPII Scheme aims to encourage at least 90% of practices to fully immunise 90% of children aged seven years and under attending their practice.

The GPII scheme is made up of the following components:

  • An Outcomes Payment—paid to practices that achieve 90 per cent or greater proportions of full immunisation providing the practice attains 10 WPEs (Whole Patient Equivalents)

  • Immunisation infrastructure funding—provides funding for Divisions of General Practice, state-based organisations and Immunisation Coordinators to improve the proportion of children who are immunised at local, state and national levels.

NB: As announced in the 2008-09 Budget, the GPII Service Incentive Payment (SIP) ceased from 1 October 2008.

Objectives

Activities of the GPII are to:

  • provide support for the Tasmanian Divisions of General Practice to achieve the aims of the National Immunisation Program
  • undertake activities aimed at increasing childhood immunisation rates through stakeholder engagement, strategies targeting hard-to-reach populations and continuing networking events for Tasmanian Divisions program staff
  • provide continued enhancement of relationships with all stakeholders involved in immunisation service provision
  • advocacy at a state and national level on immunisation issues relevant to Tasmanian Divisions of General Practice
