Overview

General Practice Tasmania is committed to supporting the delivery of high quality, safe and integrated primary health care services to Tasmanian communities and believes effective information management and eHealth are critical to achieving this.

Evidence shows that service efficiency, quality, safety and health outcomes will be significantly improved through the establishment of an integrated health network underpinned by effective information management and information technology reforms across the entire health sector.

The timely, accurate, consistent and secure exchange of information relevant to the care of patients between general practice and other health care providers is fundamental to the development of an integrated health network.

The eHealth Program is governed by the General Practice Tasmania network IM and eHealth Position Statement released in November 2007 and aims to provide leadership in and support the information management and information technology reforms that will deliver high quality, safe and integrated primary health care services.

Program Objectives

The objectives and outcomes of the Program are to support and encourage Divisions of General Practice to incorporate eHealth into their core business. As an outcome of this program, it is intended that Divisions will be better prepared and confidently function as change agents, effective in encouraging and supporting General Practices to adopt best practice eHealth tools and systems.

To achieve these objectives, the Program will focus on:

  • Assisting Divisions to achieve improved Divisional Information Management capacity

  • Assisting  Divisions to achieve increased health care professionals E-Health uptake and capacity

  • Assisting Divisions to achieve improved clinical data quality in general practice

  • Assisting Divisions to achieve increased sharing of quality clinical data by general practice

  • Assisting Divisions to achieve improved communications between General Practices, Non GP Specialists, Allied Health Professionals and Health Care Facilities via secure messaging tools

  • Supporting E-Health related activies both nationally and locally.

Program Governance

Governance of the Information Management and eHealth Program is under the auspices of the TASeHealth Collaborative Framework which provides a whole of network approach to eHealth within Tasmania and supports the principals articulated in the General Practice Tasmania Information Management and eHealth Position Statement.
